Android with a human heart
-rhetorical analysis for movie 'Bicentennial Man'
People always say that the book is a crystallization of human’s wisdom. Indeed, it’s an unimpeachable truth. When we read a book, there is always a kit if feelings, suck like appreciate, curious, and also the impulse of the search for truth. However, a great movie, dose more. I personally still think that the paper book is always the most classic and an irreplaceable source if knowledge and topics. But, sometimes, we have to admit that films, in some respects, does better than books. Because of figurative pictures are more fascinating and vivid.
The thing i want to say, is a movie about human nature. “Bicentennial Man”, this movie is a 1999 American science fiction family comedy- drama film, starring Robin Williams. And it is based on the novel “The Positronic Man” (co-written by Isaac Asimov & Robert Silverberg).(1) This book tells a robot that begins to display characteristic, such as creativity, traditionally the province of humans. The movie is for all age audience especially for family audience. Since it has interesting story and laughing plot so even the audience is a child, he/she also can enjoy this movie.
The story begin at someday in 2005(time in the film). The North Ann company has a series of android product - “NDR114”. And at that day, one of the “NDR114” was introduced into the Martin family home to perform housekeeping and maintenance duties, or we can call it a butler robot. “Sir” Richard Martin gave this robot a name “Andrew”. A dramatic turning point happen because of the eldest child, Grace did not like this robot. So she ordered Andrew to jump out of the window. After that Andrew’s neural circuit changed by this accident.
He start to become different and unique. When he broke “little miss” Amanda’s (Grace’s little sister) Crystal house, he saw some sere wood beside him. And after read a woodworking book, he carved a wooden house for little miss. This is the first step of change. Sir Martin was so surprise by his working. Latter, Sir Martin saw Andrew was listening music in the basement. Then he take Andrew to North Ann Company and realize that Andrew was a unique robot. Although, the North Ann’s officer call this ‘abnormal’, Sir Martin insist his own point, he want try to teach Andrew all the things that has not be programmed inside Andrew’s brain.
Time pass through, Andrew become more and more humanization. He has curiosity first, sense of humor, and once Andrew said “I enjoy making things”.
As we all know, emotions like enjoy and creativity, cannot owned by a vulgaris robot. He start to want to be like a human. At first, he want install a facial express system to express his feelings. Then he try to wear cloth. After read hundreds of books, he knows the mean of freedom. So he ask for freedom from Sir Martin instead of a property of Martin’s family.
Time cannot leave any marks on Andrew, however the time of Sir Martin has come, stealthily. After Sir Martin’s death, Andrew start to find the robot just like him, because he start to has a emotion called lonely, he fare to be alone in this world, so he leave home and try to find a robot just like him, but he failed. He give up and try to become a human, either inside or outside. He change his looking and body, finally has feelings like warm, cold and pain. He can eat, drink even sex. He get married with little miss’ granddaughter, but people still cannot accept him. Because he is immortal. Time for him is endless. He said “I want die as a human but not live as a robot”. He setting his time of death. And start become older. Time start to be meaningful. When he die, was the day of his 200 years old birthday. And finally be accept by human. He leave peacefully and full of happiness, because he find the meaning of life.
The plot explores issues of humanity, slavery, prejudice, maturity, love, and mortality. Whole story focus on one theme, the process of a robot turning into a human. At first, Andrew was decided as a part of Martin’s family property. Since Andrew was a common robot, so it is fine. However when Andrew has ego. As we all know why human call ourself human is because we have ego. Which means Andrew can no longer decided as a property, but a independence human.
However, even Andrew has feeling just like human. Most people did not accept him, and called this situation as ‘abnormal’ or ‘fault item’. Because at this time Andrew still has robot appearance and endless life. When Andrew find the why to make himself look a real human, people start to accept him but not in the deep level. For example, Little Miss’ granddaughter can decide Andrew as a good friend but cannot accept Andrew’s love. After he saw the people once he loved gone one by one. He cannot accept this truth, so he try turn into mortal.
Those problems occurs through whole human’s history. And we can still see them in today’s society. The director and also the author of the original book want to tell their attitude to those things. Against slavery, feel bad about prejudice, the power of love and thinking about the nature life circle. Such serious topic, however the director use a very relax way to tell the story. Make the film not so boring and also not like other comedy film’s inanition. After people laughing about the funny part of the movie they can find something to think about. That’s the most important part why it is a good movie.
This movie use a chronological way to tell the story, and this is a wisdom choice for this movie. Chronological text or movies always lack of dramatic plot and amazing climax, instead, it can shows the time pass through directly and always can touch people easily, also it has a very strong logic. As we all know Things that touch people often in the trivial things. And another way to tell story in this movie is nexus.
For example, in movie 12min35sec, Grace order Andrew jump out the window. And at 18min11sec when little miss call Andrew come up, Andrew doubted ”Is this about the window?”, which is very funny, make people laugh. And at 38min29sec, when Sir Martin take Andrew go to see the family lawyer to create Andrew’s own bank account, when Andrew heard that the lawyer’s office was at 38th floor, his face do a very funny action, he was scared. Because of the window issue which happened sixteen years ago. There is a clue and reason for Andrew to scared about high place, this was very logical, which let people make sense about it. If the director only show the face action in 38min29sec, it will be funny, however it will not make sense and also not so funny. Because the nexus enhance the effect of those things. This also show in many part of the film, like Sir Martin gave book to Andrew let he read then Andrew want to be free. When he saw Sir Martin’s death, he try to find someone just like him to avoid be alone. Those all examples use a way to tell the story which is a lot small details and clues lead to a conclusion. Which is very logical way to tell the story.
In the end, whey human called themselves human is because we know the definition of ego. We know everyone of us is unique. However, a robot from assembly line with a artificial programmed brain want become a human is very hard. It need a process. Just like a human grow up. Andrew spent 200 years to turn himself a human. The director use the the story of Andrew’s whole life to express his opinion. The meaning of life, love and death. Also tell us do not afraid to change. As I said in the first paragraph a wonderful movie just like a nice book. Make people enjoy their visual journey and enrich people’s spirt world.

I liked your topic; makes me wanna watch it.
You have a clear writing and its able to express your thoughts without any problem; I had a great time reading it.
Seems like a pretty interesting story about ''rebelion'' and how we can change our own future by small acts.
You captalized something that ''new writers'' sometimes dont do; make people imagine the situation just by reading it; And this is the biggest reason why I read books.
You had some minimal grammatical mistakes/misspelled that can be worked if you do a revision.
Besides that, You did a great job!

Reflective essay for Rhetorical Analysis
It is a long process for me to write a Rhetorical Analysis essay. Since it is the first time for me to write this type of essay. Even the professor has already introduced how to write this essay. It also take me a sometime to go over the textbook and search for it on the website.
As we all know the start part of things are always hard. I spent a long wire to choose a topic for this essay. At first I decided to write an essay about the article “Five step to draw a head”. This is an article introduce how to sketch a hand in five steps. And then I change my mind, I prefer to write about a film, named “Bicentennial Man”. And after I start to work on it, I realize that write about a film is harder than write based on text or article. It is a long movie. I watch it four times and take notes before I start, to make sure I did not miss anything I want to write in this movie.
At first I just write a summary of this movie. Since it’s a long movie. I try to write my summary as short as I can, so I just pick the important plots and the things I want to write in the movie to summarize. However, the summary is still very long. Like about 400 words. Then, I just follow the point in document which professor post us. I write the introduction, summary, rhetorical situation, audience, purpose, persona part by part, separately. After that I read through my essay, and fix some mistakes, then I start to think how can I organize them together. After I put them together, I write a conclusion paragraph for it. Finally, I insert the images and choose the font and all other things, my essay has been completed.
During this process, I learn a lot. First was during the summary part. It took me a wire to think how to write it shorter and clearly, which would not confuse someone did not watch the movie before read my essay. It is good thing that I figure it out. Although, My summary is not so wonderful, it is a good lesson. Also in the organize part, I learn how to put paragraph together in a logical order, which will make my essay make sense when people is reading it.
Then the peer review part comes up. It is a useful process when people write an essay. Because we write the essay is for people to read. So we need to know how people feel after read our essay. And we really need some suggestions from other people instead of make all the decisions by ourselves. From peer review, I know my essay still has some grammar and spell mistakes, which is good, because no one want their own essays has those kind of mistakes. When I write peer review for other’s essay, I also learn that how people organize their essay and how to give most fair suggestions.
After I submit the final draft, I realize that there are still a lot writing skills, I need to work on. Such as the connection between different paragraphs and the MLA citation format.
Because in my essay , I did not citat things from other’s articles since the thing I write about is a movie.
In conclusion, I learn a lot skill to write an essay, which are very useful, like how to write a short and clear summary. I am good at summary things in details, however, I still lack of capable to write very short summary in english, I will keep working on it. Grammar is a lack part of my writing skill which limit the way I express my point of view. During the peer review part, I know I need to enhance my reading skill, because my reading speed is slow. There are also many things I am not good at, and I will keep working on them. And try to improve myself Also I will practice my typing skill that make sure I will not make some spell mistake when I try to write something(=.=)! \
